Second-Hand Time by Svetlana Alexievich5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() Everyday Russian citizens recount the past thirty years, showing us what life was like during the fall of the Soviet Union and what it's like to live in the new Russia left in its wake. ![]() In Secondhand Time, Alexievich chronicles the demise of communism. When the Swedish Academy awarded Svetlana Alexievich the Nobel Prize, it cited her for inventing 'a new kind of literary genre,' describing her work as 'a history of emotions-a history of the soul.' Alexievich's distinctive documentary style, combining extended individual monologues with a collage of voices, records the stories of ordinary women and men who are rarely given the opportunity to speak, whose experiences are often lost in the official histories of the nation. ![]() The Swamp by Eric Bolling5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() “It’s a strong, common-sense conservative voice that I think we need to continue going forward. “They’re really right wing, hard-core conservative commentaries and I think this is what my brand personally is all about, but this is an opportunity to get that voice out there stronger,” said Bolling, who also has a new book out called “The Swamp: Washington’s Murky Pool of Corruption and Cronyism and How Trump Can Drain It.” But shortly after discussing his possible future in politics, Bolling began expanding on his “Wake Up America” monologues, sounding every bit the politician. He also denied he’s taking any concrete actions to run, including speaking with consultants – “no, no, friends” he said when asked if he’s had conversations about planning a campaign. Bolling, who grew up in Chicago and went to college in Florida, declined to specify which Southern state’s Senate seat he’d run for, which senator he would challenge or even when it would happen (it could be “never” or when his current contract runs out in three years, he said). ![]() Untamed by pc cast5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() House of Night Other World, book 4, FOUND, releases July 7th, 2020. Joann Sfar is considered one of the most important artists of the new wave of European comics. Created in a direct and immediate drawing style, Sfar focuses more on the artist's personal and sexual life than on his art, and brings Pascin to life as the ultimate bohemian. Though the story is drenched in sex, it is never eroticized. ![]() Sfar revels in the artist's celebration of all things corporeal in the world of art. ![]() ![]() Pascin is portrayed by Sfar both as a kindred spirit and an aesthetic revolutionary struggling to redefine an art form. Pascin, a biography of the noted Jewish modernist painter (Julius Mordecai Pincas, known as Pascin, March 31, 1885-June 5, 1930), is Joann Sfar's most personal and important work. ![]() Accidental Love by Shae Connor5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() The Coffee Shop Around the Corner by Shae Connor (short story, kisses only). He’s an up-and-coming theater director and she’s his rock-steady stage manager. YA with no TWILIGHT-esque romances involved. After all, how much could we enjoy a novel where we already knew most of the story? Maberry then dropped the bomb on us that he was expanding that short story into a full novel. In that anthology, Maberry's YA zombie story was one of our favorites. It ranks as one of our absolute favorite anthologies of the year, and we said so in the review we wrote. ROT & RUIN is an expansion of the short story "The Family Business" that was found in the anthology THE NEW DEAD. With that said, we feel we should mention how completely awesome ROT & RUIN is. So, we offer our sincere apologies to one of the greats in the Horror genre. ![]() We feel pretty awful, because Jonathan Maberry is one of our favorite authors. We confused the release of this novel with that of another. ![]() Lady in the lake laura lippman review5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() The novel is set in Baltimore which is where Lippman worked as a newspaper reporter before turning her talent to writing novels. She follows a story that no-one else is interested in after the discovery of the body of a young black woman in a city park fountain. It is the story of a 36-year old unfulfilled wife and mother who leaves her husband so that she can become a newspaper reporter. Lady in the Lake is the title of Lippman’s latest novel, published last week. ![]() Bestselling author, Laura Lippman took me back this week to that era before computers, before everything in newspapers was produced electronically, soundlessly and remotely - and when newspapers themselves were not threatened by extinction. ![]() If there is one magical sound that is unfortunately disappearing off the planet forever it is the rumble of presses churning out printed copies of the day’s news in the bowels of a newspaper office building. ![]() The grasshopper by bernard suits5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() If utopians were to play them, then they would be engaging with artworks. After providing some examples of this kind of game, we show that the possibility of such games presents a problem for Suits’ claim that utopians would not engage with artworks. With that in mind, we also offer a second kind of game that serves as a counterexample to Suits: art-inclusive games, which involve aesthetic and artistic engagement as part of their playing. However, the possibility of dual-natured games has recently been called into question. If utopians were to play such games, then they would be engaging with artworks. ![]() One type of game that seems to do so is dual-natured games, works that are both games and artworks. We do so by arguing that some games essentially involve aesthetic engagement with artworks. According to Bernard Suits, people in Utopia would spend their time playing games and would not spend any time creating or engaging with artworks. ![]() Book the shack by william paul young5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() I can imagine it being too difficult for some people, especially those who have lost a child. The first fifty or so pages are difficult to read. They also invite you to write a book review, and I am now doing that although I intended to do so without being asked. Several others have bought a copy through my recommendation. ![]() I was given a copy, and could not put it down. At the end of the book they recommend that if you liked it you give it, or recommend it to a friend. But that is the case with “The Shack” by William P. It is hard to believe that a book without a big name publisher, or author – or a huge promotion can become a bestseller on the New York Times Paperback Fiction list. You can also see an interesting website/blog at this link: ![]() Nick was introduced to the book in June by a friend in Norwalk, CT. It is sort of a modern day spiritual parable. If you have not yet had exposure to this little book, we highly recommend it. ![]() |
